The World Humanitarian Summit (#WHSummit) is set to take place in Istanbul, Turkey in May 2016. Beginning in early 2014, they began setting the stage by holding public online discussions and regional meetings in order to identify challenges to providing humanitarian aid and promote solutions. The four themes of the #WHSummit are: 1. Humanitarian Effectiveness, 2. Reducing Vulnerability and Managing Risk, 3. Transformation through Innovation, and 4. Serving the Needs of People in Conflict.
From March 3-5, about 150 participants will be meeting in Amman, Jordan to participate in the Middle East and North Africa Regional Consultation. Over the past month, more than 1200 people from around the world participated in extensive online discussions, which will be used as a basis for discussion in Amman. To read more about top priorities in the region, you can download the Stakeholder Analysis Report in English and in Arabic.
There are a number of ways you can become involved in the Summit:
- Get involved in the online discussions/consultations:
- Latin America and the Caribbean discussion begins in March 2015.
- The Pacific Region discussion begins in May 2015.
- Volunteer to be a Digital Advocate:
WHS Digital Advocates use their networks to help mobilize people to become involved in the consultations and meetings. This helps the WHS Secretariat fulfill its mandate to ensure participation and inclusiveness from the widest range of people possible. Volunteers are organized via an email group, virtual teleconferences, and digital tools. Upon completion of their assignment, Digital Advocates will receive a certificate of recognition for the contributions. Volunteers work 1-5 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months. - Join the WHS Youth Task Force:
This group is an independent, entirely youth-led task force, open to anyone under the age of 30. Young people are particularly vulnerable in disasters and conflicts but can also be effective agents for change and innovative solutions. The task force will reach out to youth across the world and organize representation through consultations. It will also work on capacity-building, youth policy, and advocacy. A WHS Youth Summit will be held in Doha, Qatar in September 2015. Follow them on Facebook.
