In early May, Kilauea Volcano on the Island of Hawai’i began erupting in the Leilani Estates subdivision causing about 1,700 people to evacuate. Fissures have opened along a 2.5 mile stretch of land, and lava has covered 116 acres and destroyed 36 structures. President Donald Trump has declared a major disaster in Hawai’i allowing federal assistance to supplement state and local recovery efforts.
