Background

Hurricane Patricia became the strongest hurricane ever recorded at sea on Friday, Oct 23 (source).  Patricia’s maximum sustained winds were 200 mph on Friday morning but diminished to 165 mph just before striking 55 miles west-northwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm was a Category 5, which is the highest designation on the Saffir-Simpson scale used to quantify a hurricane’s wind strength (source).  A hurricane warning was in effect for the Mexican coast from Cabo Corrientes to Punta San Telmo, a stretch of coastline that includes Manzanillo and  A broader area was under hurricane watch, tropical storm warning, or tropical storm watch (source). Affected states include Guerrero, Michoacán, Jalisco, Colima and Nayarit. The coastal highway from Puerto Vallarta to Barra de Navidad was impassable due to mudslides, as was the highway from Manzanillo to Colima. As of Oct 24, there has been no reported loss of life.
