Peru Flooding March 2017

Humanity Road activated its disaster desk on March 17, 2017 after intense rains have caused severe flooding in 24 of Peru’s 25 regions. Volunteers using social media guided the public on official agencies to follow to gain updated information about the situation. On Monday, March 20, 2017 Humanity Road published its first situation report containing social media links and helpful information for the public impacted.

Situation Overview
Background:

Intense rains have caused severe flooding and landslides in 24 of Peru’s 25 regions.  12 regions have been declared in a state of emergency. Source  It is the worst flooding in two decades, and more storms are expected.  According to the National Emergency Operations Center, 99,475 Peruvians had lost everything since the beginning of the year, while 626,928 had suffered less serious damage to their homes. Source

Highways, bridges, and railways have been damaged hindering the flow of aid and leaving some towns stranded.  Communications are also out in some areas.  Water treatment facilities and sewage pipes have been damaged impacting the water supply.  There is a shortage of drinking water in some areas.  Some hospitals have been damaged by flooding and/or are in need of supplies and water, and there is the possibility of increased disease outbreaks due to mosquitoes. Source Source

  • El Ministerio de Salud (MINSA) cuenta con más de 8,000 establecimientos a nivel nacional, de los cuales 3,723 están ubicados en las 11 regiones afectadas por los recientes fenómenos naturales. Diariamente se reciben reportes sobre las condiciones de esos establecimientos de salud (EESS) y estos indican que el 99% de dichos centros está operativo, informó la ministra de Salud, Patricia García Funegra. fuente

  • El ministro de la Producción, Bruno Giuffra, sostuvo que hasta el momento se han recibido 3,000 toneladas de ayuda humanitaria para los damnificados por las lluvias y huaicos que afectan varias regiones del país. Giuffra indicó que principalmente se han recibido agua, alimentos no perecibles (conservas, jugos, entre otros), medicinas, productos de aseo personal y ropa. Sin embargo, añadió que ya se ha completado la donación de ropa y pidió enfocarse en los productos antes mencionados. fuente
  • Production Minister Bruno Giuffra said 3,000 tons of humanitarian aid have been received for those affected by the rains and mudslides that affect several regions of the country. Giuffra said that mainly water, non-perishable foods (preserves, juices, among others), medicines, toiletries and clothes have been received. However, he added that the donation of clothes has already been completed and asked to focus on the aforementioned products. source

  • Loreto: The Amazon River is almost at flooding point. Water levels are expected to rise in the coming days leading to possible flooding in the districts of Punchana (pop. 78,446), Belen (pop. 66,804), Iquitos (pop. 457,865) and San Juan Bautista (124,100)  in Maynas province, in the Loreto region. source

  • 22 Mar:  El gobernador regional de Huancavelica, Glodoaldo Álvarez, informó que un total de 2,706 viviendas en su región, han sido afectadas por las lluvias y deslizamientos, especialmente en las regiones de Castrovirreyna y Huaytará, donde hay 2,416 personas afectadas por estos fenómenos naturales….Existen intensas lluvias, tenemos por ejemplo 37 establecimientos de salud afectados, 80 locales escolares colapsados, en vivienda tenemos 2,706 afectadas, 220 colapsadas y 476 inhabitables….En cuanto a saneamiento, dijo que registran casi 450 sistemas de agua potable afectados, 167 kilómetros afectados de canales y sistemas de riegos, además de 12 kilómetros destruidos….“No tenemos maquinaria pesada y equipos con los cuales podríamos hacer mucho por la gente porque tenemos pueblos incomunicados como el distrito de Mollepampa, no se ha podido llevar ayuda porque hay lugares bloqueados”, dijo el gobernador.  Álvarez recalcó que son tres las provincias de Huancavelica que han sido afectadas gravemente por los fenómenos naturales y que necesitan ayuda urgente son: Angaraes, Huaytará y Castrovirreyna.  fuente
